Abstract

What did the first maps look like? Were they created by a nomadic people out of found materials and left on the ground when the people moved on? Or, were these maps found only in the heads and imaginations of those travelling over a landscape? One way to imagine how ancient peoples navigated and experienced a landscape is to reflect on how we understand and communicate geographic space in our day -to-day lives. How do we navigate from point ‘A’ to ‘B’? How do we communicate that knowledge and understanding; and to whom do we communicate?
