Abstract
Aortic valve replacement with mechanical or biological heart valves is the treatment of choice for aortic valve stenosis. With increasing patient comorbidity and age, there is a trend towards biological valve implants avoiding long-term anticoagulation. In order to improve the hemodynamic and clinical outcome of patients after aortic valve replacement, stentless valves were introduced in the early 1990s. These valves were designed to result in lower transvalvular gradients.
