In the next chapters, the focus of this book is set on behavior-based recommender systems. In this chapter, different aspects are presented that play important roles in the general design of implicit recommendation services but do not belong to the area of mechanism design as discussed in Section 3.2. First, it is portrayed how preferences of customers can be determined from their behavior. Second, it is shown how self-selection leads to the necessary homogeneity of the user group that is used to collect the behavioral input data to the recommender system. Section 6.3 discusses different types of behavioral data and their general applicability as input data.
