Abstract

In order for the body to operate efficiently as a whole, the activity of its organs and their interrelationship is under the dual control of the nervous system and the endocrine system. The first controls activity by nervous impulses emanating from the brain and spinal cord, the latter by hormones formed in several widely distributed glands which reach the other organs and tissues through the bloodstream. The nervous and endocrine systems complement each other, and each can affect the activity of the other. In addition, the endocrine system has a profound effect on growth, development, sexual maturation, fertility and childbirth.
