Abstract

Considerable attention has been focused in recent times on the concept of silent myocardial ischemia, particularly as it is now clear that the majority of episodes of myocardial ischemia in patients with stable angina are asymptomatic [7]. Previous studies have shown a circadian pattern to these ischemic episodes with the peak occurring in the morning hours [6]. A similar circadian distribution has been reported for the occurrence of sudden death and acute myocardial infarction [2, 3]. This circadian distribution of acute myocardial infarction was apparently not seen in those patients receiving beta blocking drugs [2] but was unaltered in those receiving calcium antagonists [10].
