Abstract

The treatment of perhaps no other tumor of the eye or orbit evokes as much controversy as that of the optic glioma. The reader is left thinking of a group of blind men describing an elephant, each touching a different part of the animal. Opinions range from no treatment, to partial excision is sufficient, to complete excision, to radiation therapy, to surgery plus radiotherapy, and now include chemotherapy. This is a direct reflection of the anatomical site of involvement, the symptoms and signs, the age of the patient and the consequences of surgical extirpation of the lesion and irradiation.
