Abstract

In everyday clinical usage, there is a sharp contrast between the inflated, vague use of the terms “septic” and “sepsis,” on the one hand, and the clearly defined, unmistakable diagnosis of sepsis, on the other. Because sepsis denotes a clearly defined concept in the study of infections [48], the frequently inaccurate usage of the term indicates the many problems involved in establishing its diagnosis.
