Hairy Cell Leukemia: B-Lymphocyte and Monocytic Properties Displayed by One Cell

Abstract

Although hairy cell leukemia (HCL; leukemic reticuloendotheliosis) is clinically and pathologically well-defined [1,2,3,4,5], the origin of the hairy cells (HC) remains controversial. In a number of reports, the B-lymphocyte origin of HC has been rendered likely by the demonstration of surface immunoglobulins (SIg) [3,6,17] and very recently by the biosynthesis of immunoglobulins (Ig) [7]. On the other hand, characteristic properties of monocytes such as phagocytosis [3,6,18] and adherence to glass and plastic surfaces [3,10], as well as the failure of monocyte production seen in some patients [16], suggested that the HC belong to the monocytic lineage.These differences with regard to monocytic and B-lymphocyte properties, reported by several authors, prompted us to investigate whether characteristics of both cell populations could simultaneously be demonstrated on individual HC. Particular interest centered on the class distribution of SIg and their synthesis by the HC themselves.
