Abstract

During the period 1952–1974, 350 initially nonmetastatic cases of Wilms’ tumor (stages I, II, III) were treated in our institute. Actuarial survival curves show that, during these 22 years, the cure rate rose from 50% to 80%. However, during the same period, the recurrence-free survival rate did not improve significantly and remained close to 50%. This means that the increase in the survival rate was due to more successful treatment of metastases and local recurrences in recent years rather than to prevention of metastases.
