Abstract

It was believed for a long time, in both experimental and clinical fields that every cancer had its own malignancy and progressed into a more malignant state after a certain period. In other words, the cancer phenotype was stable and if it changed, it progressed only towards a more malignant state. Cancerization was thought to be irreversible. Ten years ago, Yoshida et al. [43] concluded that an irreversible change in a benign direction can very rarely occur in tumor cells. In viral carcinogenesis in vitro, Macpherson [25] demonstrated a revertant colony derived from cloned transformed cells. Braun [4] discussed the reversal of tumor growth from the viewpoint of gene regulation. Recently, Sugimura [40] also stressed a certain phenotypic change of a tumor as “decarcinogenesis” in his enzymic study of tumors. In the clinical field, as Everson and Cole [6] noted, spontaneous regression of human cancer definitely occurs.
