Abstract

The term “precursor” includes two different concepts — precancerous disease or condition and precancerous change or lesion. “Precancerous condition” is a clinical term meaning, from statistical viewpoints that the condition has a higher risk of cancerization than nondiseased stomach, “Precancerous lesion”, on the other hand, is a histological term implying that the premalignant nature of the lesion can only be known by histological examination. Thus, the two terms are by no means synonymous, but it is also true that all precancerous lesions of the stomach are found in gastric diseases that can be diagnosed clinically as precancerous conditions (Fig. 1).
