Interferon-α and Hairy Cell Leukemia

Abstract

The excellent therapeutic response of hairy cell leukemia (HCL) to natural interferon-a (IFN-α) reported for the first time by Quesada et al. [1] and subsequently confirmed by numerous studies using recombinant IFN-α (e.g. [2]), has prompted a broad array of clinical trials with this substance. Among the diseases investigated so far, HCL is still the most sensitive disorder and has become a model system for the investigation of the antitumor effects of IFN-α.
