Abstract
Since they were first described by Aschenbrenner and Bodechtel in 1938 and by Byer and coworkers in 1947, it is well known that various electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities occur in patients with acute hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke. On the one hand, they can be found in the presence of additional cardiac disorders with morphological changes of the myocardium and/or of the specific conduction system, while on the other hand, they may occur in the absence of any structural heart diseases, in which case they are often due to very complex mechanisms; for example, an imbalance of the autonomic innervation of the heart may serve as their “functional” basis.
