Abstract

Deficiency of either folate or vitamin B12 (cobalamin) causes megaloblastic anemia. Reports that folate supplements might aggravate the neurological defects in deficiency of vitamin B12 were interpreted during the 1970s to suggest that folate deficiency did not induce neurological abnormality [47]. This is consistent with the observation that the various neurological and psychiatric abnormalities reported in patients deficient in folate could not be readily demonstraded as secondary to the folate deficiency [43].
