Abstract
Dilative or congestive cardiomyopathy is characterized by dilatation or “excentric hypertrophy” of the right and/or the left ventricular chamber. Dilatation is brought about through structural rearrangement of muscle fibers and growth and interposition of connective tissue. Stretching of the contractile element is not seen to any appreciable degree, nor does “thinning” of the myocardial wall occur, as could be expected with dilatation through stretch.
