Abstract

The investigation of the placenta should be routinely performed during obstetrical sonograms. Often forgotten, this organ provides essential information, especially in patients presenting with bleeding or with fetal growth anomalies. The placenta is vital for fetal survival: the transfer site for oxygen, carbon dioxide and nutrition, it also synthesizes hormones and prostaglandins. The placenta remains mysterious regarding its vascularization, synthesis and functions. There is a growing interest in research concerning these unknowns. In this chapter, we will principally define a practical approach to anomalies of the placenta and umbilical cord.
