Abstract
The free nerve endings in the epidermis were first described by Langerhans (1868) in the human skin. The extensive morphological literature published since then on the subject reveals three basic problems: one, the variety of these nerve endings; two, the relationship of the nerve fibres and their endings to the cells of the epidermis and three, the layer of the epidermis in which the nerve fibres end.
