Abstract
Melanomas within the oral mucosa are rare and, as a rule, do not pose any diagnostic difficulty during their invasive stage. On the other hand, melanoma in situ on mucous membranes and desmoplastic melanoma of the oral cavity can be important diagnostic traps, both clinically and histologically. The inconsistency of training in biopsy of the oral mucosa, resulting in the reluctance of some dentists and dermatologists to biopsy this area, leads both to inadequate specimens and under-recognition of the disease at its early stages.
