Abstract

The term “colonic polyp” refers to any growth that protrudes into the colonic lumen. Benign polyps of the colon are very common and usually are asymptomatic. Mucosal and submucosal lesions can be distinguished among these polyps. The mucosal lesions can be divided into nonneoplastic mucosal polyps and neoplastic mucosal polyps. Nonneoplastic mucosal colonic polyps consist of hyperplastic, inflammatory, juvenile, and hamartomatous polyps (see Chap. 58). Neoplastic mucosal polyps are adenomatous and can be subdivided into tubular adenomas, tubulovillous adenomas, or villous adenomas and malignant polyps or adenocarcinomas. The adenocarcinomas and colonic polyp-cancer sequence will be discussed in the Chap. 57, “Colon and Rectum Malignant Neoplasms”.
