Abstract
The structure of the intervertebral disc generally remains unchanged until the second decade of life. Regressive changes subsequently occur with age. These morphological and biochemical alterations are more frequent and prominent in the lower lumbar segments, which are subject to the highest pressure stress due to the motion of the lumbosacral hinge.
