Abstract

MRI is becoming increasingly useful for imaging of lung structure and function, both in terms of airways imaging, assessment of ventilation and evaluation of lung perfusion and right heart function. This modality is highly versatile and capable of generating a range of inherent and exogenously introduced contrast mechanisms, while maintaining high resolution as well as incredible speed of data acquisition. It is quite likely that MRI techniques will allow further evaluation of physiological and pathophysiological aspects of COPD, and this should ultimately lead to improved understanding and treatment of this heterogeneous diseases complex.
