Abstract

The other day a friend of mine made a general observation which made me sit up and rethink a few things. She said ‘people live as if there is no tomorrow’, and I suddenly realized that she was absolutely right. There is a kind of manic intensity in our lives that is driven by a need to succeed and be seen as successful. I suppose it all started with the idea of empowerment which is a great thing, you know the phrase ‘if you believe in yourself enough you can achieve anything.’ Then hijacked by the advertisers…remember the slogan ‘because you are worth it’, a concept subsequently driven by social media until we have ended up at the end of 2013 with the most widely used new word to be included in the 2014 edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, Selfism.
