Abstract

Medical nutrition therapy is the cornerstone of diabetes management. The goals of medical nutrition therapy in diabetes management are to achieve or maintain blood glucose levels in the normal or close to normal range as safely as possible; a lipid and lipoprotein profile that reduces the risk for cardiovascular disease and to achieve or maintain blood pressure levels in the normal or close to normal range as safely as possible (Diabetes Care 2008;31:S61–S78). The aim of this chapter is to review the different dietary and lifestyle approaches to manage hypertension in the population with diabetes and provide practical applications.
