Abstract

The exact incidence of this condition is not known, but is thought to be around one in 10 000. (It will probably never be possible to determine the exact incidence of hypertrophic cardio-myopathy. Many people are unaware that they have this cardiac abnormality as they never have any symptoms throughout life. One of the aims of the self-help group concerned with this condition is to try and establish more clearly just how many people in the UK are affected.) Its importance lies in the fact that sudden death can occur, even in young people, if the disease has not been recognized.
