Abstract
It has been argued that the relationship between the State and its citizens, or subjects in the case of Britain as a constitutional monarchy, is structured as a mutually beneficial contract. Plato saw the Athenians and the Athenian State as having made this contract to give protection to its citizens through national defence and the universal application of law. Hobbes, in contrast, argued that without the State selfish and self-seeking humans would create his oft-cited ‘war of all against all’. Humans had therefore made a contract with each other to invest representatives with the power and authority to make rules, or laws, by which citizens would abide.
