Abstract

Our current understanding of bipolar affective disorder as a distinct entity dates back to Hippocrates’ (450 b.c.) delineation of mania as one of six subtypes of mental illness. Since that time, a number of authors, including Bonet (Sedler, 1983), Falret (1854), and Kahlbaum (1874), have described patients with affective syndromes featuring both depressive and manic phases. Kraepelin (1921), building on this rich European literature, first separated “manico-depression” and “dementia praecox” (schizophrenia) as distinct syndromes and described the symptomatology and natural history of the syndrome we now term bipolar affective disorder. Leonhard (1957) further refined Kraepelin’s concept by separating bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) from unipolar depression.
