Abstract
Mentally ill substance abusers have two illnesses. The first is the substance abuse pattern, one that may involve signs of physical dependency including tolerance and withdrawal, and that often creates problems in employment, relationships, and legal areas. Second, this group suffers more severe emotional and cognitive disturbances than those one ordinarily sees in people who abuse substances. The overlap between the two illnesses often leads to diagnostic confusion and complicates treatment strategies.
