Abstract

Thyroid problems in the elderly are commonly encountered and challenging to diagnose and treat. In the geriatric population, the prevalence of certain thyroid diseases (eg, nodules, goiter, hypothyroidism) is high, and some thyroid disorders (eg, hyperthyroidism), may have subtle or atypical presentations. In older patients with common associated nonthyroidal illnesses, thyroid function tests may be altered, making their interpretation all the more difficult. Finally, therapy may be more complex than in younger patients, due to the presence of underlying chronic illness, especially cardiac disease, and because of altered thyroid hormone metabolism.
