Abstract
If the osmolarity is different between extra- and intracellular fluids, water moves across the plasma membrane with resultant alterations in cell volume. These volume changes can cause cellular disorder and ultimately cell death, which is especially true for the central nervous system (CNS). Volume alterations of brain cells are observed at an early stage in several pathological states, such as ischemia, hypo-/hyperglycemia, hypoxia etc. (1). Owing to the incompressibility of the skull an appropriate cell volume regulation is required to prevent CNS dysfunction.
