Mechanisms of the Effects of Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism in Rats on Respiration Rate in Isolated Hepatocytes

Abstract

Thyroid hormone-induced increases in oxygen consumption and heat production are consistent properties of many mammalian tissues including the liver. Hepatocytes from hypothyroid rats respire more slowly than those from control animals; cells from hyperthyroid rats respire faster. In liver mitochondria there are two major effects of thyroid hormones on oxygen consumption -one occurs in State 3 respiration where ATP turnover is increased1 and the other occurs in State 4 respiration where there is an increase in the leak of protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane2.
