Abstract
Sensory experience produces long-lasting changes in receptive fields and sensory maps in primary sensory cortical areas1. A dominant hypothesis has been that experience-dependent plasticity is mediated in part by long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) at intracortical synapses. These phenomena are attractive as candidate mechanisms for plasticity in vivo because they instantiate Hebbian learning rules2,3, which can explain many1,4, though not all5, features of map plasticity.
