Assessing Sleep Disorders in the Hispanic Patient

Abstract

Evaluating sleep disorders in Hispanics is complicated by the scarcity of culture-specific sleep research, the diversity among Hispanics, and the effect of acculturation. Abnormal sleep is emerging as an important risk factor for cardiovascular, metabolic, and mental disease. Hispanics may be at greater risk for sleep disorders due to their high prevalence of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, all of which may be worsened by acculturation. The history and physical remains the cornerstone for the evaluation of sleep disorders. Several validated sleep questionnaires can be used as adjuncts to assess sleep health. Physiologic measurements of sleep are available to diagnose sleep disorders in those presenting with sleep complaints and for research in normal populations. It is recommended that culturally competent practitioners perform the initial clinical assessment and sleep recording, since these studies are often viewed as invasive. More research is needed to better understand the sleep health of US Hispanics.
