Management of Heart Failure with Renal Artery Ischaemia

Abstract

Atherosclerotic renal artery disease is often associated with disease elsewhere in the cardiovascular system. In the setting of heart failure, morbidity and mortality are significantly increased in those patients with co-existent renovascular disease. As understanding of this cardiorenal interaction evolves, it is clear that awareness and early interventions with targeted medical therapies aimed at reducing atherosclerotic burden are essential to prevent progression of renovascular disease and cardiovascular events, with further targeted revascularization possibly playing a role in appropriately selected patients. This article reviews the current diagnostic and treatment modalities for renovascular disease, as well as highlighting some of the key trials of revascularization vs. medical therapy for treatment of this condition.
