Abstract

Collagen vascular diseases are a series of primarily autoimmune illnesses in which autoantibody formation alters the appearance of the skin and in some cases, the function of other organ systems. The most common autoantibody is the antinuclear autoantibody which causesphotosensitivity; however, there are a variety of causes for phototoxic reactions, and often the main cause is lack of sun protection in Caucasianchildren. In children of color, phototoxic reactions are less likely to occur and can be a result of lupus, iatrogenic causes, and exposure to sensitizing agents.
