Abstract
The scope (region of applicability) of an Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP), such as OSPF or ISIS, is a domain. The scope often corresponds to an AS, or it might be defined by the need to keep the number of nodes within the scale supported by the IGP protocol. An Exterior Gateway Protocol, typically BGP, interconnects two or more domains. Inter-domain multicast is required by an ISP, and is also required by a service provider whose customers span more than one IGP domain. In particular, when the set of source and receiver nodes for a multicast group spans more than one domain, inter-domain multicast routing is required.
