Abstract
In the introduction to this book, I reviewed previous theoretical approaches to understanding how chronic illness affects children and their families. Two major approaches were contrasted: the social psychological approach adopted by Wright (1960) and the more cognitive approach adopted by Lipowski (1970) and Mattson (1972). Subsequently, Pless and Pinkerton (1975) attempted to draw together the key components of both these models.
