Management of Bacterial Infections in Cancer Patients

Abstract

The prognosis for patients with hematological malignancies and some metastatic cancers has improved substantially during recent years. Major factors in this progress have been the discovery of more effective antitumor agents and the introduction of combination chemotherapy. Although these advances have been most encouraging, they have not been accomplished without risk to the patients due to toxicity of antitumor agents. The primary toxicities of most anti-tumor agents are myelosuppression and immunosuppression. The consequence of these toxicities is increased susceptibility to infection which may be further enhanced by mucosal ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract which facilitates invasion of enteric organisms into the bloodstream.
