Abstract
Mouse small intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) are predominantly Lyt 2+ (suppressor/cytotoxic phenotype) T cells. IEL T lymphocytes display immunocompetence in vitro insofar as they respond to Concanavalin A (Con A) and alloantigens (1). There is also some evidence from histologic studies that IEL respond to local stimuli in vivo, because their numbers can be markedly increased (parasite infection; food allergy) or decreased (germ free animals) and many of them have the characteristics of immunoblasts (2). However it is not known whether T cells in the intestinal epithelium have the potential to function in the regulation of gut immune responses as suppressor cells, reflecting their predominantly Lyt 2+ phenotype, or whether they act in the afferent limb of cell mediated immunity by secreting lymphokines.
