Abstract

The chronic leukemias, represented by chronic granulocytic leukemia (CGL) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), are malignant disorders of white blood cells characterized by greatly increased numbers of granulocytes and lymphocytes, respectively, in peripheral blood and bone marrow. 1–3 In CLL, “mature”-appearing lymphoid cells predominate, whereas in CGL, less mature granulocyte precursors are seen and often coexist with increased numbers of platelets, eosinophils, and basophils. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is primarily a disease of older patients and is rarely diagnosed in the childbearing years, whereas CGL, with a median age at diagnosis of 44 years, often occurs in potentially fertile or pregnant women.
