Abstract

Diving has been required for almost all of the thousands of wells drilled offshore since the first oilfield development in the Gulf of Mexico in 1948. In the last decade a small number of wells has been drilled in water depths from 300 to 1500 metres without the support of conventional divers by using one atmosphere vehicles ranging from armoured suits to small submarines. Since these devices operate at a pressure very close to atmospheric pressure, no decompression is required. Although they continue to improve there is always likely to be a requirement for divers because they can work in confined spaces and low visibility.
