Pathology of the Larynx

Abstract

This lesion, which is commonly seen in surgical histology practice in such sites as the subcutaneous tissue and the tongue and other mucosal surfaces, is also present quite frequently in the larynx. As its name implies, it is composed of granular cells, but its origin from primitive muscle cells has by no means been proven, and indeed even its neoplastic nature is not certain. A neuroectodermal, more specifically Schwann cell, origin has been suggested, but not yet confirmed (Fisher and Vuzevski 1968). On the basis of this possible origin, the granular cell tumour will be considered in this section, with other tumours of possible neuroectodermal origin.
