Abstract
The desktop computer, like the telephone, is present in every office. Their complementary association, to form a single integrated office automation tool, offers services to users that make the best of both the IT and telephony worlds. In becoming multimedia, the PC has taken on voice, data and images simultaneously. This reinforces possibilities of integrated voice—data processing and opens the door to the elaboration of computing—telephony applications. Nevertheless, this integration cannot be made without having the appropriate communication tools and support. This implies material integration situated at the physical level of the interconnection of terminal equipment with the voice—data transport network. This chapter offers elements of the solution to the problem of physical integration via an automatic switch.
