Abstract
With expansion of the papillary dermis (level III) and invasion of the reticular dermis (level IV) and subcutaneous fat (level V) the vast majority of melanomas are characterized by the propensity of the melanoma cells to aggregate into progressively larger and more cohesive nests and plaques, as more poorly defined collections of tumor cells, or (rarely) to invade as single cells or files of cells (9,10,22,32).
