Abstract

This chapter describes both the benefits and shortcomings of Microsoft Visual SourceSafe,1 the bundled software configuration management tool available with the Microsoft Visual Studio.NET package. A tool for the cost-conscious, Microsoft’s Visual SourceSafe is the low-end leader for Software Configuration Management (SCM) for the Windows operating system. Lacking many of the bells and whistles of the other tools, it can still do the job for small projects and teams working exclusively in the Windows environment.
