This chapter provides a short survey of two powerful diagnostic tools that can probe in situ the very strong gravitational field in the vicinity of accreting neutron stars and black holes. These are the fast quasi-periodic signals that are sometimes present in the X-ray flux of accreting compact objects and the very broad profiles of Fe K-shell lines that are observed in their X-ray spectra in a number of cases.
