I had heard of Ralph Tyler well before I ever met him. He was the legendary founder and director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behaviorial Sciences at Stanford and, before that, he had been the head of the Division of Social Sciences at the University of Chicago. In the field of Education, he was well known as the author of a major book on curriculum development. But I had had no occasion to meet him personally until the early sixties, as a result of the initiative by the historian Lawrence Cremin and myself to found the National Academy of Education.
