Thrombin-Activated Protein C: Integrated to Regulate Vascular Physiology

Abstract

Thrombin has long been known to be a dual-faced molecule. On one hand, thrombin is the key procoagulant effector of the blood coagulation system; on the other, it is the only known physiological activator of the anticoagulant protein C pathway. This chapter will summarize recent results that thrombin and the protein C system are highly integrated to regulate not only thrombotic responses but also other aspects of vascular physiology that likely play key roles in the regulation of inflammatory responses.
