Il pericardio è costituito da due foglietti: un foglietto viscerale composto da un monostrato di cellule mesoteliali ed un foglietto parietale o fibroso composto da cellule mesoteliali, grasso e tessuto fibroso. Il mesotelio secerne una piccola quantità di liquido pericardico, generalmente 50 ml di liquido chiaro che consente ad entrambi i foglietti di scivolare uno sull’altro durante il ciclo cardiaco. Il foglietto fibroso ha solitamente lo spessore di 1 mm mentre quello viscerale è una membrana trasparente sulla superficie cardiaca [1].
