10.1 EMC Ferrites

We use EMC ferrites to eliminate high-frequency noise generated:

  • Inside our product or equipment, and trying to get out—causing electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problems.

  • Outside, and trying to get in—causing electromagnetic interference ( EMI) problems.

  • Inside our product or equipment, and interfering with an unrelated section of our own unit—causing signal integrity ( SI) problems.

Shields (Chapter 30) and filters (Chapter 31) serve the same function as EMC ferrites, but they reflect almost all the unwanted energy back toward the source, giving it other opportunities to cause problems. Whereas once an EMC ferrite has turned noise into heat, it's gone.

EMC ferrites use two mechanisms to suppress noise. At low frequencies their high permeability greatly increases the magnetic flux density of any current-carrying wires in their vicinity, especially when the wires are wound tightly around the rod or toroid, or run through a hole in the bead (Figure 10-1).
