Abstract

New organizational and management patterns such as Virtual Organizations (VO) require newly designed, integrated infrastructure systems. Information and communication technology (ICT) should be integrated into the built environment. ICT-components, presentation devices, lighting systems, and furniture need to be understood as one system, instead of being add-ons. This chapter explains the importance of integrated, flexible Building-Furniture-ICT-Systems (BFI) for the performance of VOs. On the example of typical work environments - a single office, a team space, and an integrated lab — it is explained how such a modular system can be introduced incrementally.

A methodology is developed describing the interdependencies between VO-functionalities on the one hand and ICT, immobile and mobile facilities on the other hand. Consequentially, a formalized synthesis strategy for integrated BFI-systems is developed. This strategy is based on evaluation criteria accumulating performance indicators of BFI-components.
